Hatch Awards
2018
Black Math
From 2014 to 2018, I dedicated significant effort and creativity to support my friends at Black Math in crafting distinctive show packages and branding for the annual Hatch Awards Show in Boston, MA.
Throughout these years, my role involved establishing the visual identity of the show by creating branding decks, guidelines, and rules for other designers and animators to follow. I was responsible for designing logos, crafting printed materials like the show program, and contributing to the conceptualization of stage design layouts. In addition to these tasks, I played a key role in designing a substantial portion of the animated show open, presenter cards, award acceptance beds, and the closing animation.
Show Program
The graphics package for the 2018 Hatch Awards unleashed a wave of Boston-isms through a lively collage featuring vibrant images, patterns, shapes, and illustrations. The colors are bold and unconventional. The overall vibe was akin to envisioning what might happen if Lisa Frank’s cool younger sister took charge of designing the show package after indulging in an excessive amount of jelly beans while listening to every Talking Heads album.

Logos
For the logo, I proposed an ever-changing design that utilized the letterforms as windows into the vibrant world of Beantown. The images, textures, and illustrations embody a historical whimsy that locals would truly appreciate.

Hatch Awards Previous Years
Within the Hatch Awards archives, you'll discover a diverse array of design approaches for the show. Each year, we developed a unique concept and meticulously executed its design. The 2014 54th event emphasized iconography and a mosaic patchwork of graphics and icons.
In 2015’s 55th event, we took a practical approach, using wooden blocks to construct typography and layers of cut wood, painted to form a three-dimensional set where the logo came to life. The graphics package featured loose illustrations by me in a psychedelic style, with vibrant colors and trippy liquid backgrounds.
For the 2017 57th event, we introduced an isometric logo and year number mark. Illustrations showcased the iconic Hatch bowl award nestled in a whimsical isometric tableau, incorporating pencils, Lego pieces, and elements from the creative process. The show package included a mesmerizing array of graphics, complemented by an isometric countdown to the event.
