While Black

2022

Elastic

I pitched in with Elastic on a couple of shots for a documentary film in the works called “While Black,” shining a spotlight on the challenges faced by Black individuals in America. It was truly an honor to contribute to a project tackling such a crucial issue like “Black Lives Matter.”

Approaching the subject with an illustrative touch, I integrated portraits of key figures from the tumultuous history of Black Americans—Emmett Till, Rodney King, Eric Garner, and George Floyd.

A segment of the film delves into the role of social media in highlighting the brutality between law enforcement and Black men, with a specific focus on George Floyd. The event, captured live, was shared over 60,000 times within minutes of its occurrence.

I'm not entirely sure about the film's current production status or its release, but I'm immensely proud to have contributed to it and am pleased with how the images turned out.

Style Frames

I aimed to blend illustration with authentic footage and journalistic imagery in a raw yet captivating manner. Mixing spray paint with charcoal drawing, I infused a gritty yet beautiful quality into the illustrations. The images were intentionally treated with a halftone duotone style.

I envisioned the style frames to exude an edge reminiscent of animated editorial illustrations you'd come across in news publications.
